Meaningful and Measurable Action for a Sustainable Future
Here at Blue Cross, our corporate sustainability strategy is inspired by the work of our associates who are striving towards a brighter, greener future.
As the state’s largest health plan, we recognize our role as environmental stewards and are committed to improving the health of our members, associates, and community.
Our climate and health resilience work is rooted in a high-level framework focused on education and empowerment, environmental impact, and environmental justice.
In pursuit of our commitment to a sustainable future, we have established ambitious new climate action goals: Carbon Neutral and Zero Waste by 2030.
“Be the Example: Do what's right, not what's easy.”
We are pursuing these goals through a relentless focus on reducing our Carbon and Waste Footprint with every project.
To monitor our progress towards our 2030 goals, we have established one of the first Carbon Footprint Governance Councils in the country and are regularly tracking our Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
These goals will guide improvements in operations and work with civic and not-for-profit leaders to accelerate environmental justice and resilience capacity building throughout Massachusetts.
Our sustainability initiatives include:
Green@Blue
Green@Blue is an associate driven environmental impact program that allows individuals to implement programs that promote Sustainability across the company. An example of a Green@Blue program is our company garden. Each year, more than 150 associates participate in our company garden, attending garden workshops and harvesting produce with help from our community partner, The Trustees.
Bluebikes
As the title sponsor of the Bluebikes, we’re committed to expanding public bike sharing in Metro Boston as a safe and sustainable public transportation option. Since 2018, we’ve doubled the size of the system by adding 200 stations and 4,000 bikes.
Good Stewards
Good Stewards is an associate focused education and empowerment program that meets people where they are on topics related to climate and health resilience. We help associates learn more about taking a hands-on approach to sustainability at home and building resilience in their day to day lives.
