PREVENTIVE VS. DIAGNOSTIC CARE:
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
Preventive care services, based on individual health factors, are intended to help you stay healthy and are too important to miss:
- Routine health checkups
- Routine gynecological visits
- Certain lab tests
- Annual mental health wellness exams
- Immunizations for you and your family
- Cancer screenings including colorectal cancer screenings and mammograms
- Depression screenings
- Obesity screenings
- Tobacco or alcohol use evaluations
Use this tool to find personalized recommendations for you and your family.
When your primary care provider (PCP) orders tests for a current condition or a new symptom, that care is diagnostic. There may be a cost for these diagnostic services, even when they’re ordered during your routine health checkup. You can always ask your PCP if a test is preventive or diagnostic. Some of these tests may include:
- Lipid panels
- Complete blood count (CBC)
- Blood sugar (A1C)
- Thyroid-stimulating hormone
- Vitamin D
